Freezer Clean Out Bingo - how to prepare for your meat delivery

Thinking about a purchasing meat farmer direct to make family meal times easy? What can you do now?

Play FREEZER CLEAN OUT BINGO!

Reclaiming freezer space is great thing to do if you are considering the opportunity of purchasing meat farmer direct in the future.

What are the great benefits of Playing Freezer Clean Out Bingo :

  • Finding foods which have hidden themselves at the back of the freezer

  • Family meal times are made easy with a plan for your meals for the week in place (with the addition of only a few items from the supermarket).

  • Your grocery bill will be greatly reduced for the week or fortnight (or even month, depending on how much you have stored in your freezer!)

  • The ulitmate . . . . you will get to defrost your freezer when its emptied!

Why do you need to reclaim freezer space before a meat delivery?

  • A meat delivry will require a dedicated storage space in your freezer (more about this coming in future blogs).

  • From my experience as Misses Farmer, and being the grateful receiver of our farms meat for over 10 years, it is most helpful to have specific sections of your freezer emptied and ready for your meat delivery to be stored. I find it helpful to have freezer space organised in sections where I know where to find the beef or lamb or mince or sausages to help with quick and easy family dinners with meat from our farm.

  • Eating our your freezer makes defrosting your freezer easy, which also helps with reclaiming freezer space, as any build up of ice can be removed giving you back that space for storing your food.

  • It can take a few weeks to eat through a sizeable freezer to reclaim freezer space, so it is a great idea to get started now.

Freezer Clean Out Bingo - Helping you prepare your freezer for your beef or lamb box delivery from Peppermint Ridge Farm Co - Adelaide Hills.

This idea harks back to times past, where we “made do” with what we had. A delicious meal would be rustled up with what we had in the fridge, freezer, pantry and seasonal garden produce. Making a delicious meal with “almost nothing” and avoiding the oh so convenient trip to the grocery store. A slower and simpler way of living, the lifestyle of a country home cook or the current day homesteader. It is a great way of life.

This is our take on the Freezer Clean Out Bingo Game :

Bread

Ham and cheese toasted sandwiches for school holiday lunches! Smashed avo toast for Misses Farmer with a poached egg, sea salt and cracked black pepper - perfection!

Leftovers

Suprise! You win an easy meal and night off of cooking with less dishes. That is a WIN : WIN : WIN, I say!

Frozen Veggies

Make a quick frittata with frozen veggies, eggs, cheese and garden fresh herbs. Delicious.

Frozen Bananas

Make that family favourite Banana Bread. Here is a delicious recipe from Lucy at Bake Play Smile, if you would like to try a new one.

Icecream

Well, I don’t need to tell you what to do with this one! However, I will require the Aussie favourite Cottees ICE MAGIC to be involved! Icecream can be a space thief in a freezer. A large container, not full, but taking up the containers size space. Freezer Clean Out Bingo is all about reclaiming freezer space.

Sausages

A quick BBQ tea on a lovely spring evening. Our familys favourite is sausages, in bread with red sauce. Beerenberg Tomato Sauce has become a new favourite of Master Farmer! The smell of the BBQ sausages cooking outdoors, wafting on a gentle breeze on a lovely spring evening cannot be beaten. Mister Farmer and I quite enjoy BBQ onion with ours. We all love spuds thinly sliced with our BBQ. A tip from my Mum to avoid the onions and potatoes sticking and quickly turning beyond charcoal; is to chop the onions and potatoes, place in separate glass contatiners with lids and cover with oil. The onions, potatoes and the oil can all be tipped onto the BBQ plate at cooking time.

Chicken

Shredded chicken wraps with grated cheese and coleslaw made with a cabbage and carrots from Grandpas garden are a winner with our family. For a time saver, the chicken could be cooked in the slow cooker or pressure cooker. I cant say how much I love by Instant Pot pressure cooker. I use it for so many things! For the shredded chicken, I cook it on the saute function first, then for 8-10 minutes on the cooking function with chicken stock and some spices. It will then automatically go to the “keep warm” setting while I head out to school pick up and be ready when we arrive home after school. Click here to find out more about the wonders of Instant Pot cooking. I know it might seem an over statement, but it has truly changed my life! Another time saving tip, is to put the cooked chicken breast in the kitchen aid mixer (or like), on low for about 5 minutes and it is all shredded, not a fork in sight!

Mince

Shepherds Pie. That delicious home made hearty, gravy-based dish, which is great for including a host of nutritious veggies into a family meal. Topped with creamy mash potato with potatoes harvested from our own home garden and it is a easy and delicious meal, enjoyed by the Farmer family. Adding a little cheese ontop and grilling can make for an extra special dinner.

Frozen Fruit

Smoothies with frozen fruit (maybe bananas or berries), with milk, honey and cacoa powder make for a wonderful morning tea or afternoon snack in the school holidays. They are a favourite with Miss Farmer especially. Here is a wonderful recipe from South Australia’s own Maggie Beer in the nearby Barossa Valley, you might like to give this a go if you you are looking for something new.
