Your questions from Farmer to Fridge posts answered by Peppermint Ridge Farm Co

We noticed some of the questions on the Farmer to Fridge page about farms and farm direct meat purchases. We are not experts on some of these things, but we can talk with you about our farm.

Our farm

Where are you located?

Peppermint Ridge Farm Co is located at Rockleigh in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia.

Our animals

Is it grass fed, grass finished?

All our beef and spring lamb is grass fed and grass finished.

Our sheep and cows are offered hay when seasonal conditions impact on feed levels. Seasonal conditions refers to the annual rainfall and weather impacting on feed levels in our grazing paddocks. South Australia is the driest state in the driest continent in the world. Our summers are hot and dry. Feed levels are renewed by autumn opening rains.

Beef and Lamb purchased through Peppermint Ridge Farm Co on our Farmer to Fridge shop is not fed grain.

Is our meat mandatory mRNA vaccinated?

No. We had to google this one. A hard no.

Our beef and lamb meat

Estimated hung weight for a full beast?

Go to the Farmer to Fridge Website and enter your postcode, then scroll down to our “Peppermint Ridge Farm Co” Shop Front.

Please check each listing for dressed weights of our cows. Each listing will indicate the dressed weight estimate for the box you are looking at. Do some simple math to calculate the full hung dressed weight estimate. ie, if you are looking at the quarter box, times X 4 the listed dressed weight estimate for the full hung beast dressed weight total. Please email us if this isn’t clear and we can provide a specific answer for the box you are looking at.

Do you know how much mince we would get in a quarter cow?

Please see the linked post from James from Farmer to Fridge for an estimate.

We don’t have an exact answer for this at this moment. Why? We have made a selection of specific premium cuts, comfort cuts for our Beef and Lamb Boxes and requested other cuts be minced, sausages or burgers. This decision has been made based on our years of experience in processing our own beef and lamb from our farm, for our own eating. And our own experience of which cuts we see best included in the mince, sausages and burger products. We will provide an estimate of a minimum kg weight of mince per quarter cow after our first orders are processed and reports provided from our local Abbatoir.  However, we can assure you, that a quarter of beef is A LOT of meat and, our beef boxes include a significant amount of mince! We have packed away many whole cow beef from our farm over the years, so we can assure you that we know this for sure!

Suet, liver and heart available?

Suet, liver, heart, kidneys and brains is included with our Beef Box [Half], not the Quarter Beef Box.

Liver, heart and brains is included with our Whole Lamb Box, not the Half Lamb Box.

Is our meat off a real bone, not tampered with?

Our meat is as the animal was bred, born and raised on our farm here at Rockleigh in the Adelaide Hills. Our sheep and cattle are taken a short drive of less than 30 minutes to the local Abbatoir. The bone in the meat you purchase from us at Peppermint Ridge Farm Co, is on the bone the meat was born and grown on. Definitely no tampering with bones here.

Is our meat 3D printed?

No. We didn’t even know this was possible! Peppermint Ridge Farm Co meat is meat from our sheep and cows bred, grown and raised to point of sale on our farm, at Rockleigh in the Adelaide Hills.

Purchasing from our farm on our Farmer to Fridge Shop Front (prices, delivery areas, using the Farmer to Fridge shop front).

Can you see the price on the website?

Go to the Farmer to Fridge Website. Put in your postcode, and if our farm delivers in your area, all the prices will appear on your screen.

How do you guarantee the farmers will set a fair price?

Each farm and farmer makes the decision on their own pricing. How we made a decision about our pricing was, considering our costs to breed and raise our animals, our past experience in selling sheep and cows at local markets and through local stock agents,  and local market research.

What goes into the cost of breeding, raising and growing a sheep or cow to point of sale? Purchasing rams, bulls, breeding ewes, purchase of land, loan repayments, council rates, transport, processing costs, marketing, website, commissions, vet bills for help needed for a cow having difficulty calving, shearing, fencing, electricity for our bore pump, hiring a refrigerated vehicle, accounting software package, accounting fees. Maybe our Accountant or Bank Manager might have extra costs to add to this list! One thing that isn’t included or really possible to include in setting a fair price for our beef and lamb, is time. If we timesheeted and included Mister Farmers time into the cost of our beef and lamb, prices would be above what we have set them at.

What we are saying is, that the $ you see on a price is not lining a farmers pockets with gold. A lot of the $ is spent within our family farm before it comes in. There is a lot of heart that goes into farming.

Do you deliver to (NSW, Batemans Bay etc)?

We deliver to Adelaide Hills and Adelaide Metro. If you are outside of our set delivery area (defined by postcodes on the Farmer to Fridge website), please email us through the website and we are happy to have a chat to see what we can do to help you.

If a group would join to purchase the equivalent of a whole cow or a group of whole lambs, this scale is something we would consider in making a trip to a location outside of our set delivery area.

Do you deliver to Murray Bridge? Pick up options?

We have looked at the area covered by some postcodes and needed to make decisions about what distance is realistic for us to cover within one day, as a small family business. Including the collection of a refrigerated vehicle from the city, collection of our Beef and Lamb Boxes from the Adelaide Hills and aiming to complete the delivery run within school pickup and drop off times. If you live in the town of Murray Bridge, please contact us and we will be happy to chat to see what we can do for you.

We do not currently offer pick up options. This is due to our current infrastructure. We are just a new start up business. We will collect our beef and lamb boxes from our local Abbatoirs, in a refrigerated vehicle and deliver direct to our customers. We do not have a capacity to refridgerate orders for flexibility in pick up.

How much per kg?

Go to the Farmer to Fridge Website. Put your postcode into the search box. Scroll down to find out “Peppermint Ridge Farm Co” shop front page. Prices per kg are on each listing. If we deliver to your area, you will see our prices per kg for all of our Beef and Lamb Boxes.

Price per kg is an overall price for all the cuts of the whole beef or lamb box you are purchasing. When purchasing individual cuts from a supermarket or butchers shop, the price per kg varies due to a range of factors including scarcity (how many of these premium cuts come from one whole animal), market demand (how many customers want to buy those specific cuts) and market supply (how many sheep or cows are being sold by farmers at that moment).

How much for a full lamb?

Go to the Farmer to Fridge Website. Put your postcode into the search box. Scroll down to find out “Peppermint Ridge Farm Co” shop front page. If we deliver to your area, you will see our price for our Lamb Boxes [Whole].

How much for half a cow? And what about the lamb?

Go to the Farmer to Fridge Website. Put your postcode into the search box. Scroll down to find out “Peppermint Ridge Farm Co” shop front page. If we deliver to your area, you will see our price for our Beef Box [Half] as well as our Lamb Box [Whole] or Lamb Box [Half].

How do we go about ordering this?

Go to the Farmer to Fridge Website. Put your postcode into the search box. Scroll down to find out “Peppermint Ridge Farm Co” shop front page. View the options. Purchase and payment is all online through the Farmer to Fridge Website. Farms pay a commission to Farmer to Fridge on what they sell through the platform.

I couldn’t find this option when I went online?

Sorry, you are outside of our designated delivery areas of the Adelaide Hills or Adelaide Metro. If you are located near the edge of our delivery area, please email us and we are happy to have a chat to see what we can do to help you.

Do you need beef or lamb from our farm for your Family Christmas celebrations or dreams of summer BBQ’s with family or friends?
