Spring Lamb Launch : Playdough Recipe
We had a wonderful morning at our Spring Lamb Launch at the Adelaide Hills Farmers Market yesterday.
So many big smiles seeing Rambo the lamb visting the market. And seeing eyes light up by many little kids who were loving getting on our our Spring Lamb Stickers to go on their shirt. It was a really fun morning!
Our little kids play area was very popular. With many little ones coming along to play with our farm animals and playdough. A few parents commented on how lovely and soft our playdough was, so I thought I would share my recipe here.
For many years I worked as a kindy teacher. One of my colleagues shared her tips on getting a super soft and pliable playdough everytime. It has the texture of “hubba bubba”.
Tips for Super Soft Playdough, everytime.
1/. Put all the liquid together in a jug, so the oil and food colouring were hot like the hot water.
2/. Kneed the playdough well while warm. So that the heat of the hot water changes the salt from being crystals, into being combined with all the ingredients and being super soft. It may seem a little ‘sloppy’ while kneeding. But when it cools it will be the perfect texture.
Perfect Playdough Everytime
Ingredients
- 2 cups plain flour
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup salt
- 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
- 1 1/2 cups boiling water
- food colouring
Instructions
- Mix flour, salt, cream of tartar in a large bowl.
- In a jug, add oil, food colouring and boiling water. Pour into bowl of dry ingredients.
- Mix vigerously until it is all combined and becomes sticky. Allow to cool a little.
- Lightly flour work surface. Tip our playdough onto floured surface. Kneed vigerously for a few minutes. Kneeding well is the most important part of the process.
- Allow to cool.

A great way to spend a wintery afternoon.
I always had playdough available as a play option for our kids, as it engaged them happily for many, many hours.
