What we are eating from Adelaide Hills Farmers Market

There are many things that we love from the Adelaide Hills Farmers Market. So I thought I would share with you what South Australian local, farm fresh, wholefoods we have been enjoying lately.

We love that these foods are local. There is something special about getting to meet the farmer or maker of your food. I think it is about the connection to the source of where it all begins.

Our weekly staple is the Fleurieu Milk Company Unhomogenised Milk (green bottle).

A few years ago one of our family had a few tummy troubles. So we started trying lactose free milk. This helped. However I realised that the lactose free milk I had been giving my kids had sugar added, for the process of removing the lactose. I tasted it and it tasted super sweet. Not really what I wanted to be giving my kids every day. So after I heard a recommendation for the unhomoenised milk, we tried it and loved it. We love this Fleurieu Milk Company Unhomogenised Milk. It was good for our family tummy troubles. We have now regularly purchased it ever since.

What we love about buying our milk at the Ink Pot Arts stall at the Adelaide Hills Farmers Market is that profits go to the support this local arts group for programs for kids and families.

I thrifted this lovely studio pottery coffee cup recently, made by Forest Range Pottery. I love the glaze, the feel of drinking out of the cup. It is just such a thing of beauty. I am a real sucker for studio pottery, especially any thing with a speckle glaze. If you know any thing about Forest Range Pottery, I would love to hear from you. Email me here.

We love chicken and turkey from Lucy’s Lowan Park Produce stall at the Adelaide Hills Farmers Market. From her farm at Bordertown. This chicken really tastes like real chicken. So succulent and full of flavour.

When I was a child we raised meat birds. The flavour that I remember enjoying in that chicken as a child. Is the same beautiful flavour that we enjoy in the chicken from Lucy’s farm.

Here we enjoyed chicken marylands roasted on a bed of diced potatoes, with olive oil, crushed garlic cloves and fresh thyme and rosemary from our garden. (As pictured above). With a side of roasted butternut pumpkin in olive oil and seasoned with salt and pepper.

We have also enjoyed the beautiful chicken and turkey schnitzels from Lowan Park Produce. We cooked them up and served them cold and sliced with salads at a kids birthday party and they were much loved and commented on. It was a really easy, delicious and nourishing protein for our picnic party.

Earlier this year I restarted my herb garden.

My first herb garden wasn’t in the best location, with too much shade and not enough sun. Miss Farmers chooks also took a liking to most of my herbs, leaving only the rosemary bush! So I chose a new spot of my herb garden outside of the fence and out of reach of the chickens.

When starting my new herb garden I went to Country Herbals at the Adelaide Hills Farmers Market and purchase thyme, oregano, rosemary, coriander and italian parsley. These have all been growing very well. And have been a regular addition to my from scratch cooking for our family. Recently I also purchased a sage and basil plant to add to our herb garden, also from Country Herbals.

Above is chopped sage, rosemary and italian parsley in a recipe for slow cooked grass fed beef ribs from loveyaguts_box on instagram. With a few additions and changes based on what we had in our veggie garden and on hand in our fridge and pantry. The beef ribs were so delicious shredded on a bed of creamy mash potatoes and the tomatoey sauce the ribs cooked in.

Recently I have been trying to increase the protein in my breakfasts. As well including a range of nourishing seeds and nuts to also help strengthen my gut microbiome.

My almost daily breakfast is a chia bowl with frozen blueberries from RNR Farms Blueberries, topped with greek yoghurt, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, chopped nuts.

Sometimes I also add pepitas, vanilla paste, honey. Maybe some oats or shredded coconut. Whatever is on hand or needs eating up.

R and R Frozen Blueberries can now be purchased from Mat’s Absojuicely stall, out of the large blue esky.

The blueberries are hiding under the yoghurt. I usually put the frozen blueberries in the bottom of the bowl to defrost while I’m making my coffee, helping the kids or tending to morning kitchen chores. They are usually defrosted and ready to eat by the time I am ready for breakfast. I just didn’t want to mix it up as it just looked so pretty as is.

We love the Thai Massaman Curry Paste from The Origin of Taste with our grass fed beef.

Recently I diced up a grass fed beef rump roast and added in a few small grass fed beef ribs from our farm. What we love about the Thai Massaman Curry paste is that it is super flavourful but also kid friendly. Flavour but not over spicy for little taste buds. I used the recipe from The Origin of Taste website in our pressure cooker (instant pot) and adapted it to what we had on hand. After it was cooked through, I added in diced garden fresh zucchini and tomato to simmer, until warmed and just cooked through. Served on steamed rice. So yummy and I was so excited there was left overs!

Click here for your 10kg Grass Fed Beef Box, which includes a range of comfort cuts, which would also perfectly pair with The Origin of Taste’s Massaman Curry Paste.

My only tip to do different next time is to add the coconut milk at the end. Just as was in the recipe. Sometimes things get a bit hectic in the kitchen when trying to get dinner rolling and there is lots of other action in the kitchen after school.

What we love about The Origin of Taste sauces and products is that they are made from scratch by Sarmi with all fresh and clean ingredients. No numbers on the back of the jar. I try my best to choose wholefoods, real foods to nourish my family.

Today I have got a lovely apple and pear crumble in the oven with nashi pears, pink lady and sweet little red apples from Mat’s stall at Absojuicely. The red colour in the little red apples makes the apple crumble look so beautiful and perfect for autumn.

The crumble is rolled oats, coconut, cinnamon SR flour, brown sugar and melted butter.

This will be a lovely desert served with a dollop of cream. And left overs will be perfect served cold for an easy family breakfast.

I would love to hear what you family is enjoying from your Local Farmers Market. Click here to send me an email.

Love to you all, Misses Farmer X
